Second Episode Up! (Plus special extended cut!)

At long last, the second episode of Pictures Worth a Thousand Words is up.  For this episode, I wrote a sort of "Getting to Know You"-type open-ended questionnaire, similar to the wonderful "quizzes" by Dennis Cozzalio at Sergio Leone and the Infield Fly Rule or the AV Club's AVQ&A column.

In addition to what's included in this post, stay tuned for a bonus bumper featuring even more discussion, including our (perhaps controversial) thoughts on The Departed (2006) and The Dark Knight (2008)!

EDIT: Bonus mini-sode now available here!

Episode 2a: Raut Questionnaire (Part 1) (~60 minutes; ~84MB)

Episode 2b: Raut Questionnaire (Part 2) (~60 minutes; ~83MB)

Special Extended Producer's Cut of Part 1! (~73 minutes; ~101MB)

Note: I go into a lot more detail about my thoughts on the underrated XXX (2002) -- and its amazing leading lady, Asia Argento -- here. Also, Niko and I hope to get another chance to talk about An Education (2009), because we have a lot more to say.

For those of you who wish to play along at home, I'll list the questions below.  I've also written up a blog entry containing my own answers.  Keep in mind that my blog entry is NOT REDUNDANT with the podcast, so please read/listen to both of them.  Thanks!

1. Name a movie that you feel a personal connection to.

2. Name a movie that made you angry.

3. Name a movie that made you laugh.

4. Name a movie that made you cry.

5. Name a movie that made you think or provided a genuine insight.

6. Name a movie that genuinely disturbed you.

7. Name a movie that made you want to stand up and cheer.

8. Name a movie that you walked out of or turned off early.

9. Name a movie you love that everyone else hated.

10. Name a movie you hate that everyone else loved.

  1. I interpreted some categories a little differently because my movie anger/disturbing isn't very strong these days (I'm sure it's valid, just can't remember any examples ATM).

    1. Personal Connection- "A Beautiful Mind". I am a schizophrenic who wants to be a professor, but I was much milder on the first point, and may not be as great on the second point. I think I'm smart too, but that's up for interpretation.

And a fun one- "White Men Can't Jump". I wish I could be on "Jeopardy!" like Rosie Perez....

    2. Angry- "Drive Angry". Admittedly kind of recent, but while I did hate it, I felt that the story line and elements of the humor really showed how fun movies just can't exist anymore, based on how everyone seemed to despise it. And then "Fast Five" just put the nail in the coffin of modern action.

    3. Laugh- "This Is Spinal Tap"- I could have a tie with all of the Christopher Guest mockumentaries I've seen, but the commentary with the band talking just sealed the deal.

    4. "Paulie"- It was a terrible movie, but I remember my first crying moment from a movie was when the little girl could not pronounce the phonetic words on the cards.

    5. Made me think- "Jungle Fever"- As a Film and Media Studies major, I have a lot of these, but I picked this movie because I was writing a paper on interracial relationships, and hadn't seen it previously. Really makes you think about race and gender relations, and what goes into them.

    6. Disturbed- "Terminator Salvation"- T3 was bad, but this just illustrated that trying to "salvage" a franchise without its mastermind (James Cameron, although I'd settle for Harlan Ellison at this point) is a nightmare.

    7. Cheer- "The Great Debaters"- Really one of the lost gems of recent Disney, Denzel Washington and that debate team really made me happy when they won.

    8. Turned off/walked out- "The Rookie", I sat through a lot of it, but man it was just god awful. (I did walk out at home, but same principal)

    9. Love instead of hate- "Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull"- It was a fun ride, but I am not going to win this battle.

    10. Hate instead of love- "The Wizard Of Oz"- It's an old kids movie that gets way too hyped. Still a great story, though.

I will edit if this is done incorrectly.

Keep up the great work, "Pictures" gang!
